ELIQG Baby Quilt Challenge 2008-09

Each member participating was given a brown paper bag in December with:

One piece of “water bubble” fabric, approximately 16” x 44”

Two fat quarters of coordinating prints (varied in each kit, but only 5 different ones)

One large piece of fabric for the backing.

Batting if needed.

They were given the following guidelines:

You may add as many fabrics as you like, but must include enough of the water bubble fabric and the two fat quarters that they would be recognizable.  The backing may or may not coordinate.  You may use it or you may supply your own.

The finished quilt should be approximately 36” square.  Bind the quilt and quilt it any way you wish, remembering that babies will be using them.  So please, no embellishments, and no monofilament thread.

Finished quilts are to be turned in at the February meeting.  So after all the holiday excitement has died down, relax by making a quilt that will be loved by a sweet little baby!

What fun, guided by Debbie Higgins!

Here are the year-end figures from the baby quilts:

There were 126 quilts logged. 35 of the 193 names on my member list made a quilt--only 18% of our members. Four members (Diane Herold-18, Kathleen Pierce-17, Claudia Olinkiewicz-13, and Sandy Roman-10) made 10 or more quilts.  That means those four members made 46% of the quilts.

Hopefully this year the combined forces of Baby Quilts and Louisa Wheelchair quilts (now called Comfort Quilts for 2009, run by Diane Herold, Jean Bernhardt and Kathy Pierce) will see more member participation. Start out the new year right by coming to ELIQG’s National Quilting Day event on March 21st. See the NQDay page on this website for more details. The more quilts we make, the more places we can donate to and the more recipients we will touch: Babies, veterans, patients in nursing homes, children receiving Chemo, you name it! So get sewing! Sponsor a quilting day in your area, in your home, library, school… the possibilities are limitless.
